Despite significant efforts by private and governmental organizations to increase consumer savings for retirement, Americans simply do not save enough for their future. The authors’ research implies that to significantly increase the willingness of individuals to save for their retirement existing communication-education efforts need to be radically changed.

One key finding is that that people who have more vivid and more positive imagery of themselves as retired are more likely to be taking actions to save for their future. This selling point is virtually absent from all existing communications designed and delivered by the government and nonprofit organizations which are trying to promote retirement savings. Moreover creating positive imagery is the opposite of the typical approach of providing savings facts with the goal of making people fearful of what their future will be like if they do not save.
A second key finding is that a people’s willingness to save is strongly influenced by the confidence that they have in their ability to reach a savings goal. This finding is critical because it means that when retirement education materials help people set their goal, the goal set must be viewed as attainable. The typical approach of computing the normatively correct goal (without regard to the sacrifices a person must make to reach it) is brought into question. A related, and striking finding, is that low-income people may actually prepare for retirement more if they falsely believe that their family or the government will provide for them in retirement. This finding suggests that some educational efforts may be counter-productive because they undermine a person’s confidence in his or her ability to save.
